The hobby to learn photography is quite different from other hobbies. You would start realizing this when you start learning the art of photography. Unlike other arts, the art of photography does not spring from thoughts when you capture an image; instead, the image is one of a real life, and you are required to commemorate it.
Now in other field of arts, you can depict your imagination of a perfect world with no faults, but unfortunately, the real world is not perfect, so the real life image cannot be so either.
How one can make pictures of real world perfect? I was asked this question recently by an aspiring photographer turned artist, who was unsatisfied by the pictures he was taking. Being an artist formerly, he used to paint pictures that depicted anything in its perfection, but he was finding this perfection missing in any of the images that he captured from the real world. He wanted some of the things in the picture to be a little different than they were.
It is not only the artists who have come from the background of painting perfect pictures, but also many other like fashion and glamour photographers, who are in search of perfect or near perfect pictures. Here, something called photo manipulation comes in handy. The Fashion and Glamour industries are using this technique of photo manipulation to their advantage. Any imperfections whatsoever, are smoothed out using different photo manipulation techniques.
It was not so easy to achieve this in older times, but now there are so many programs for photo-editing available to do the same job quickly and easily. The top 3 image editing software that are available in the market are Photoshop, Faststone photo resize, and Image Resizer Powertoy.
Photoshop is the most expensive of all, but is also the best. Photoshop is a must have, if you want those perfect pictures.
What all can be accomplished using image editing?
So much can be done using the image editing software from red eye removal to correcting colour balance to adjusting brightness. Also, different special effects like sepia can be applied. There are also more advanced techniques that can be used to give new look to pictures. You would be surprised that you can correct wrinkles, eye bags, whiten the teeth in the picture itself. Photo manipulation can also improve the colour, adjust any irregularities, remove redundancy if any, add special effects, refurbish the image, and much more. Photo Manipulation is the single classy way of epitomizing your digital pictures by retouching and totalling special effects to them.
Image warping and background removal are two of the easy tools that are used for photo manipulation.
Photo manipulation is a vast topic to be covered in a single article. If you want to become an expert in the field of image manipulation, you would need some patience and guidance. Adobe Photoshop is the best tool available to accomplish almost anything you desire to do with an image, although it does turn out to be a tad expensive.

Digital Images Created in Photoshop
The advent of Adobe Photoshop unleashed the ability to create and manipulate images in an almost infinite number of different ways. In this manner, Photoshop can be said to have changed the world's perspective on reality. So much so, that people may no longer automatically "believe what they see", since it's now possible to alter images in ways that are almost impossible to detect.
If you are not familiar with Photoshop, it is a program designed to allow people to create and edit all types of images on their computers. Its original, and still for many its principal function, is to enable you to perform touch-ups on pictures before printing or posting online. Naturally, each subsequent version of Photoshop included more sophisticated tools which allow you to correct minor errors or produce advanced effects from the original photograph. The Photoshop of today also allows the creation of sound files and animation for sharing online.
In the past, images had to be saved in very particular file formats in order to be manipulated in Photoshop. However, because of the explosion of digital cameras and camera phones today, Photoshop can actually import the photographs directly from the source. This means that the time between taking the picture and sharing it is reduced.
Previously, when individuals took 'bad' pictures there was nothing they could do to correct the errors. This meant that that if the image was blurred due to camera shake, or if there was red-eye caused by the flash, you had to either live with these imperfections or delete the image all together. Now of course, there are countless numbers of basic photographic software programs that can quickly and automatically correct these kinds of imperfections. This means that most digital pictures taken nowadays can be 'rescued' even if there are multiple technical issues with the original shot.
Of course, Photoshop has now evolved well beyond these kinds of image 'quick fixes'. As an 'Image Manipulation' tool, you can take any image and implement all kinds of create and artistic 'non destructive' effects. This allows you to try out all sorts of variations of effects and if you are not pleased with the result, simply revert 'back in time' using Photoshop's 'History' tool. Using this tool, you can gradually 'step back' through each effect you added until you arrive at the point you'd like to re-try the sequence using a different effect. This allows you to experiment using a vast number of different tools until you achieve the result that you were looking for.
One of the most powerful features of the software is the ability to work in multiple 'layers'. This allows you to manipulate different elements of the picture in creative ways and move semi-transparent 'layers' over each other to achieve the desired effect. The final resulting single image may in fact be composed of several dozen, perhaps even hundreds of layers - many with special effect filters.
You can tell that an immense impact is being caused by Photoshop by the fact that the company name is now used as a verb. It's common nowadays to hear of someone 'photoshopping' an image (even although they may actually be using another image software program all together.) This is always a sure sign that a product is having a significant impact on the culture of the day.
Photoshop has also led to a whole new level of art and digital creativity. For example, graphic tablets were developed specifically for users of Photoshop. Artists of today have gone beyond using paints and a canvas. Today's artists make use of tablet sensors and Photoshop to produce their masterpieces. The technology of this digital software, allows people to take the art of drawing, add computer techniques, and come up with a whole new genre of art. The availability and popularity of photo manipulation software has spawned a vast and creative library of highly modified pictures, many bearing little resemblance to the original image. Using electronic versions of brushes, image layers and filters, it's possible to produce images unattainable through conventional artistic media. In addition, digital artists can create digital paintings, photomontage, collage or lithographs.
Adobe Photoshop might just be a simple software tool for some people. However, powerful tools, when used by enough people can change history. In this age where most media is defined by computers, Photoshop is another tool which, in the right hands, can change the world, or at the very least, change people's perception of that world.

Digital photo manipulation for artistic creations has its own history, also reaching far back into the early life of photography. Long before the early development of digital media, and the resulting computer hardware and software, that transformed the ease and the depth of manipulation achievable for politics and art, artists physically transformed their images through simple collage. The American photographic artist Allen Dutton during the 1960's and 70's created fragmented yet intriguing photographic collages. Dutton usually composed the collages from 'found' photographs, cropped and pieced together to form interventions with a landscape, and then re-photographed to remove evidence of the collaging process that he had utilized. Digital photo manipulated works such as 'Plausible Humbuggery of the perspective' and 'Who said sculpture was dull' depict human body parts in unusual arrangements, set in landscapes both rural and urban. Dutton's work could be considered transitional, as an earlier physical form of a hand produced photoshop - represented in its final state as a single image. A single image, yet created in its origin from collaged photographic fragments - cut, dodged, filtered, scaled, compiled, and then re-merged to a single entity.
Wallace Berman, another artist of this period whose practice up until his tragic death in 1976, was to also manipulate photographic images of popular culture arts. Berman used scavenged advertisements from the mass culture of the time, and then re-photographed the compiled manipulated photographs. His work often represented the aesthetic of the popular culture that surrounded him into politics and art, but when recompiled as collage, these representations often transgressed the considered morals of the time, with the resulting consequences from the authorities, albeit the images were only 'manipulations and seemed so random'.
Also utilizing collaged photographic images in his artistic practice is Richard Prince. Prince is renown for his powerful advertising images including the unmistakably American wild west cowboy cult images, that take their name from the brand power they depict as the Marlbaro Man, which ironically is based on a fallacy in that the American cowboy is and has been predominantly ethnically Mexican. Prince's work over the years has resulted in the creation of various bodies of appropriated photograph manipulations into political arts, that provoke the accepted reality of the initial imagery. His early image manipulations such as the Nurses Series involved the use of appropriated mass produced book covers, collaging with them other found imagery from girlie magazines to create a new individual reality from the accepted 'Mills and Boon' version of love and romance, to imply a tale of lust and lewdness. Prince re-photographed the collaged images with their ambiguous narrative, and printed the resulting image to canvas as popular culture arts. He then sets about to apply liberal layers of paint, applied with an expressionistic gestural method including smudges and drippings.

Although you will constantly hear photographers scold and nag about the photomanipulation process, it is actually one that has been used for many years, and one which is able to offer a variety of benefits. It has also existed throughout the art of photography in many different forms, including everything from different angles, how to use different lights and settings, hiding imperfections, and so on.
Especially in the world we live in today, where everything and everyone is expected to be perfect, namely in the magazines that stare back at us from off the shelves, photo manipulation has played an incredibly large role.
What is it?
Photomanipulation is basically the art of taking a normal photograph and then manipulating it the way that you want it, namely through use of a computer and various tools and applications on the computer. This modifies photographs either by analog or digital means, and is also commonly referred or related to what is known as 'Photoshopping', which is the slang term for the digital editing them, and although it is not directly aimed at the Adobe Photoshop application, it was named after it. Adobe Photoshop is only one of the many different digital editing applications that are available however, and for instance there is Paint Shop Pro, Corel, and even Paint, although this is one of the less advanced programs and is rarely used in the photomanipulation processes of today.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the issue of photomanipulation, and although there are definitely many people who have good, positive things to say about it, there are also those who feel that there are concerning issues surrounding it. For instance on the covers of magazines, when celebrities heads are pasted onto different bodies, this in the past has stirred up a lot of commotion. One instance in particular was when the O.J. Simpson trial was taking place and the Newsweek magazine posted his mug shot as their magazine cover picture, while Time Magazine posted the exact same picture only used photomanipulation to alter it, and ended up making Simpson appear much darker than he was in the actual picture, and as well they removed the serial number and darkened the area around him. The Lebanon reuters incidents is just another prime example.
The ironic part was that the magazines ended up side by side on a newsstand, and it was incredibly clear what a significant amount of this had taken place in Time's version of the photograph.
Journalism is only one area that uses a great deal of photomanipulation, and fashion magazines are definitely topping the list as well. One of the biggest problems with these photomanipulated photographs is that they alter the opinions and views of the public who, for the majority of the time, have no clue that the particular photo was even altered at all. Therefore there really needs to be certain standards set in the field of photography when it comes to something such as photomanipulation.
